The Hope For Thomas Fund was established in the fall of 2007 through the congregation of Runnymede United Church. It's purpose was to provide funding to allow Thomas the opportunity to attend Ability Camp, a facility that specializes in intensive treatment for children with cerebral palsy.
Thomas' fund grew from there and to date has off-set the cost of 7 sessions at Ability Camp and a variety of therapy in between.
Towards the end of 2008, Thomas was able to make a very significant journey to China where he received stem cell therapy – a leading edge treatment that aims to enhance the recovery of brain damage by transplanting millions of stem cells into the spinal cord.
Since then, therapies for “brain repair” have been introduced, replacing traditional rehabilitative therapies that focused on his extremities. Methods associated with “brain plasticity” or “neuroplasticity”- terms used to describe the brain's ability to reorganize neural pathways, are now being exercised and early results are very promising.
At 7 years old, Thomas is still at a young age where his brain is highly responsive to form new neural connections and patterns that will take him beyond the limitations he is currently experiencing and is at risk of settling into for the rest of his life.
The Hope For Thomas Fund allows Thomas to continue essential therapy and initiatives geared to developing his learning potential and quality of life.
